The Effect of Water Reducer Dosage on Concrete

What is a water reducer?


A water reducer refers to a concrete admixture that improves the workability of freshly mixed concrete without increasing the water content, or reduces the water content while maintaining the same workability. Most belong to the category of anionic surfactants, including lignosulfonates, naphthalenesulfonate formaldehyde polymers, among others. After adding water reducers to the concrete mixture, they disperse cement particles, improving workability, reducing the unit water content, and enhancing the fluidity of the concrete mix; or reducing the unit cement content, saving cement.


Mechanisms of water reducers


Electrostatic repulsion


Water reducers contain carboxyl groups with negative ions that adsorb onto the positively charged surfaces of cement particles and their hydration products, increasing the absolute value of the zeta potential of the particles, thereby enlarging the electrostatic repulsion between particles. This causes cement particles to repel each other, breaking up the flocculation structure and releasing the encapsulated water, leading to increased fluidity of the mixture as the water is progressively released.


Steric hindrance


Polycarboxylate water reducers have a comb-like structure. The carboxyl groups on the main chain adsorb onto the surfaces of cement particles and their hydration products, while the long side chains extend into the liquid phase, forming a thick, three-dimensional adsorption layer on the surface of the cement particles. When cement particles approach each other, the overlap of these adsorption layers creates steric hindrance. The larger the overlap region, the greater the hindrance.


Lubrication


Polycarboxylate water reducers contain highly polar groups that form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, creating a stable, three-dimensional solvation water film with a certain strength on the surface of the cement particles. This water film acts as a lubricant between cement particles, increasing the fluidity of the cement paste.


Types of water reducers


Types of water reducers include: Ordinary water reducers, high-efficiency water reducers, high-performance water reducers, and air-entrained water reducers. Among them, ordinary, high-efficiency, and high-performance water reducers are further divided into standard type, retarding type, and early-strength type.


Factors Determining the Optimal Dosage of water reducers


Performance Requirements of Concrete


If high fluidity and low water-to-cement ratio concrete is needed, such as for pumped concrete in high-rise buildings, a higher dosage of water reducer might be required. For ordinary building foundations with lower fluidity requirements, the dosage is relatively lower.


Type and Composition of Cement


Different types of cement (such as Portland cement, ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement, etc.) have different adsorption and reaction characteristics with water reducers, affecting the optimal dosage. Generally, when the C3A (tricalcium aluminate) content in cement is high, the adsorption of water reducers increases, possibly requiring more water reducers.

Workability


Fluidity


An appropriate amount of water reducer can significantly enhance the fluidity of concrete. Increasing the dosage of water reducer while maintaining the water-to-cement ratio can increase the slump of concrete, making construction operations such as pouring and vibrating easier, especially for complex structures.


Water retention and cohesion


A proper amount of water reducer helps maintain the water retention and cohesion of concrete. However, if the dosage is too high, it may lead to segregation and bleeding, deteriorating the workability of concrete.


Mechanical Properties


Compressive Strength


Within a reasonable range, increasing the dosage of water reducer can lower the water-to-cement ratio, making the concrete denser and thereby improving compressive strength. However, if the dosage exceeds a certain limit, the strength increase may slow down or even decrease due to factors like excessive air bubbles.


Flexural Strength


Similar to compressive strength, an appropriate amount of water reducer can enhance flexural strength, but excessive amounts may have adverse effects.


Durability


Impermeability


An appropriate dosage of water reducer can optimize the pore structure of concrete, reduce porosity, and enhance impermeability. However, excessive dosages may worsen the internal pore structure, reducing impermeability.


Frost Resistance


A reasonable dosage of water reducer can improve the pore structure of concrete, reducing the content of freezable water, and enhancing frost resistance. However, improper dosages can have negative impacts.
